His first race was in elementary school, but he raced all through high school and succeed on the national circuit.

After high school, Sam continued racing at a higher level and moved to Thunder Bay to train on the NTDC (National Team Development Centre) where he learned how to train and race at an elite level. Sam raced for Canada in several International Cups and North American tours. Achieving great success and the goals he set out to accomplish.

Sam ended his athletic career due to a lower back injury, but continued to use his passion for the sport by coaching individuals and at Highlands Nordic and the Soo Finish Nordic Club. Sam is CCI-L2T (Competition Coaching Introduction) Certified and NCSF (National Council on Strength and Fitness) Personal Trainer Certified.

Loppet Coach: Maureen Bretz

Maureen began nordic skiing in her 20s, and quickly developed a life long passion. Skiing has taken her to many types of wonderful places: ski touring in Ontario, Quebec, Eastern US, Norway and western Canada, competing at at five World Master’s ski championships, Ontario Masters loppet series events, a number of weekends at the epic Canadian Ski Marathon, and lots of fun local loppets (the kind
where you get a cookie and a smile for participating).

Her boundless enthusiasm for all aspects of the sport led her to begin sharing her love of the sport with new and developing skiers. While living in Toronto, she became an instructor with High Park Ski Club for 5 years. During that time, she also started and coached a Nordic ski team and the local high school. Since moving to Oro Medonte in 2013 she has become part of the winter ski teaching team at
Hardwood Ski and Bike, gaining certification as a CANSI level 2 instructor and NCCP level one coach.

All of these skiing has given her an unique insight into the needs of the skiers who want to improve their skiing, ability and perhaps try a long distance event “loppet” as a personal challenge. Most of all, she believes that skiing is a lifetime of fitness and fun to be had in the
winter, no matter what speed you ski!
